Paul's Place Association presented its year 2001 scholarships at the Del Oro High School Awards Assembly held May 22 at the high school's Paul Yokote Gymnasium Four college scholarships were awarded -- three Paul Yokote Memorial Scholarships and the Robert K. Bonner Memorial Scholarship. Each scholarship winner received $1500 and their name permanently engraved on the awards plaque displayed in the Paul Yokote Room at the Loomis Pizza Factory. Yokote Scholarships Brigitte Comrie, Stacy Metcalf, and Ashley Simmons Brigitte Comrie earned a GPA of 3.92 during her years at Del Oro High School. She was very involved in many school activities and served as the Golden Eagle Marching Band Colorguard Captain for two years. Of Brigitte, teacher Jeff Tooker has written: " Brigitte is everything a teacher would hope for. Brigitte is thoughtful about her actions. She works well with other students. She produces quality work in all her assignments." Brigitte will attend the University of the Pacific. Stacy Metcalf was the team manager for the Del Oro Swim and Lady Eagles Basketball teams for two years, participated in the W.I.N.G.S. program, and earned a 2.92 GPA. Stacy will attend Sierra College with plans to transfer to California State University, Chico. Of Stacy, Del Oro Art Department Chairperson Barbara Millhollen has commented: " Stacy is an exceptional student to work with�.She is curious and enthusiastic about learning. Another characteristic that will help her in life is her wonderful ability to listen and take ideas in." Ashley Simmons was an outstanding student with a 3.92 GPA. Ashley was involved in numerous school programs, including student government, W.I.N.G.S., peer tutoring, and fundraising. She was All-Sierra Foothill League in soccer and Captain of the Varsity soccer team in her senior year. Geoff Broyles, Ashley's Psychology instructor, has written: "I've had the opportunity to work with several tremendous students, and I can say without reservation, that Ashley is one of the most outstanding people I have ever taught. I have found Ashley to be an extremely dedicated, hardworking, honest, dependable and caring young lady �." Ashley will attend Brigham Young University.
Bonner Scholarship Suzanne Colwell
Suzanne was an excellent student who earned a 3.77 GPA during her Del Oro career Suzanne made her mark in student activities as well. She was involved in student government as a class officer and in the Key and Interact Clubs. She was a four-year participant on the tennis team and was selected as Team Captain in both her Junior and Senior years. Outside of school, Suzanne served on the Sierra Service Project, an organization that travels to Native American reservations to build and repair houses; Urban Service Weekend, a program that serves food and repairs the houses of the homeless; the American Cancer Society; and many more. Of Suzanne, Del Oro Director of Student Activities Ronald Jones has written: "Ms. Colwell's caring and concern for others set her apart. She regularly puts the needs and desires of others ahead of her won - regularly giving away credit, praising their work and ideas, and always doing everything in her power to help them succeed and grow. She listens well, is thoughtful and compassionate, and truly cares about everyone with whom she works. Suzy is selfless, more interested in recognizing others than in being recognized herself. She is one of the most humble, giving leaders I've had the pleasure of working with."
